A Note from Susie

Hello Susie,

What fun we all had here in the UK with the ‘Beast from the East’ - almost Siberian cold (well, I am given to a little hyperbole) - but we did have a lot of snow a couple of weeks on the trot down in the South, which has been unheard of in recent years.

My grandson, Bassy, couldn’t get to school as they had snow days, and he so very much enjoyed being at home. There was just one problem: they were given snow-work!

Snow

No, that did not mean sweeping the drives clean and making pavements safe; it meant continuing their schoolwork from home. He was not impressed!

Apart from the snow, all the spring bulbs are beginning to shoot now, and I have tulips, daffodils and hyacinths all peeping through which is a lovely sight. But, in amongst all this new growth, I had some sadness when I had news of my dear friend Katie’s death on Tuesday 20th March.

It’s strange how life is. That day, I was at the regional meeting for one of my favourite charities, Action Medical Research, completely unaware that this would be the last day of my friend’s life. I’ll share with you Wiki’s summary of her life:

"Katie Boyle, Lady Saunders (born Caterina Irene Elena Maria Imperiali dei Principi di Francavilla; 29 May 1926 – 20 March 2018) was a British actress, film star, writer, radio announcer, television personality, game-show panellist and animal rights activist.

She became best known for presenting the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1960s and 1970s.

She was born in a royal palace in Florence, Tuscany, Italy - that had once belonged to the Italian royal family - the daughter of a half-Russian and half-Italian marquis (the Marchese Demetrio Imperiali di Francavilla), and his Yorkshire-born English wife, Dorothy Kate Ramsden. She came to Great Britain in 1946 and started a modelling career, which included work for such publications as Vogue."

But those few lines cannot tell you what a gloriously outrageous and fun person she was. I loved her dearly, and she and her husband Peter were wonderful to Albert and me for many years, until he sadly died and, latterly, she was unable to get out and about so much.

Christopher Stevens, a journalist for the UK’s Daily Mail, said:

“For sheer glamour and breeding, there has never been a TV personality like her. Katie Boyle combined the poise of a society debutante with the elegance of the Vogue model she once was.

Added to that was an exotic aristocratic lineage that would make her the perfect hostess for the Eurovision Song Contest. Yet, the three-times married star, who died yesterday aged 91, was also known for more workaday roles — as an agony aunt and a regular guest on hit TV panel shows such as What's My Line? and Juke Box Jury.”

We met because we were both Trustees of Battersea Dogs’ & Cats’ Home and meetings were never quite the same when she retired. We used to get together for lunch either in her home or in London, and, on one occasion, long after her heydays as a personality, we were walking through Selfridges store on Oxford Street together, and the whole department came to a standstill as she was suddenly recognised and all the public – who clearly still adored her – were clamouring about her wanting a little piece of her magical stardust.

Rest in peace, my darling friend.

Making a Fresh Start: Embracing New Beginnings - Chapter 2, The Power of Change

by Susie Briscoe

Changing your life for the better takes guts and determination.

The way you think about change will determine how you approach it and how successful you’ll be in the outcome.

Change ahead

Change is a powerful tool to realize your life’s goals and to make you a better and healthier person. Old, bad habits can keep you from success. If there’s a goal you want to reach that involves changing how you live, a plan is the first step to realizing it.

Motivation to create change is a power unto itself. Once you’re determined and create a plan to reach a goal, motivation will come naturally. You’ll be excited and filled with positive thoughts about the future which will spur you on to other changes.

Change and Personal Growth

Without the power of change in your life, your personal growth will be stagnant and non-responsive. Bad habits will remain part of your life and as a result... (Click here to access and read the full article.)

The Susie Zone

In this issue's The Susie Zone, I am positively delighted to continue my series - Exploring Historic Palaces, Castles, Cathedrals, Churches, and Homes.

This is #3 in my series, in which we explore places where I have personal experience. Once again, we remain in the city of London, at a familiar landmark: Guildhall, a Grade 1-listed building which can be dated back to 1396.

Guildhall

Guildhall hosts many events throughout the year, the most notable one being the Lord Mayor’s Banquet, which is held in honour of the immediate-past Lord Mayor and is the first to be hosted by the new Lord Mayor of the City of London. In keeping with tradition, it is at this Banquet that the Prime Minister makes a major World Affairs speech.

On a personal note, this is where I had the honour of being created a Freeman of the City of London, being sponsored by two Lord Mayors of London: one past – Sir Greville Spratt 1987; and one in post – Sir Christopher Collett, 1988.

We had a special private... (Click here to access and read the full article.)

Elizabeth M. Gilbert

"You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That's the only thing you should be trying to control."

~ Elizabeth M. Gilbert
