Dear, *|FNAME|*

You've probably forgotten all about signing up for my newsletter and that isn't really surprising... a lot has happened, not the least being that I broke my back and have had to spend my time working on my recovery. I'm happy to say that, although not complete, I am able to get back into the swing of my business, and that means making connections all over again with you!

So I'm hoping that you will be pleased to hear from me and will continue wanting to receive your bi-monthly communication, containing information on how you can move your life forward regardless of what obstacles are thrown in your direction.

In this edition, you will hear from my friend and colleague Sue Gleason giving tips on healthy-eating, which is so important at this time of year when our immune systems can be compromised, and we are possibly still feeling the need to detox after Christmas excesses.

My own proven health tip here is to take a teaspoonful of Manuka honey daily for its wonderful antibacterial and health-giving qualities.

I will be asking you if you are living your own best life, and look forward to getting your comments back on this subject.

Let me know your thoughts. But for now, sit back as you settle down for a comfortable and relaxing chat, favorite mug of hot drink in hand (my choice at the moment seems to be Horlicks because it's too cold and wet outside) and enjoy. It's so important to take time just for you, especially at this busy time of year!

Loving hugs,

Susie xx
Are You Living Your Own Life?

Fulfillment in life is related to how well you are living in alignment with what's truly important to you. Do your decisions emerge from the essence of who you are -- not from who you think you should be? Take this quiz to see how well you are living a life that is of your own making.

1. I have spent time thinking about what's important to me, and I can articulate those things.

2. While I have been influenced by my parents, teachers, society and other outside forces, I have not simply adopted their values and beliefs. My own values and beliefs come from deep inside.

3. I am not easily swayed by others' opinions. I know my own mind.

4. In order to remain open and flexible, I am willing to re-examine my opinions and beliefs to determine whether something is still true for me. I am interested in other points of view.

5. My spouse/partner is a good match for me. We share in a way that pleases me and have an ideal amount of separate space. We don't have to agree on everything.

6. I chose my occupation, or choose to remain in it, because it most closely utilizes my skills, strengths and passions.

7. I also choose my friends. I don't go along with a friendship that doesn't feel right just because that person pursued me.

8. Any spirituality I practice feeds my soul.

9. I have aspirations. I spend time thinking about them and taking action toward those that are most important to me.

10. Anyone looking at my life from the outside would see what I value.

11. When I or a family member is sick, I listen to the appropriate health care provider. If the advice doesn't feel right, I get a second opinion.

12. On the rare occasion, when I let someone break a boundary or persuade me to do something, I don't want to do, as soon as I'm aware of it, I take steps to stop and correct the situation.

Don't Do It!
by Sue Ann Gleason
Culinary Nutritionist | Nourishment Counselor

I know you're all moaning and groaning about all that you ate and drank over the holidays and your first inclination is to just stop eating and "cleanse" all that food from your system.

Some of you will skip meals. Others will choose to "detox." I'm here to tell you that the best way to recover your dignity (and your waistline) is to ease right back into a natural, healthy eating rhythm. Don't skip meals. And don't replace meals with liquid meals, canned, powdered or otherwise.

Don't get me wrong. I am a huge proponent of freshly pressed, (preferably green) vegetable juice! But not as a meal replacement. You see, your body keeps score. If you go from overeating to "under" eating, your body will adjust your calorie burning metabolism to be sure you don't starve. And that's not all. Fighting food (fighting appetite) creates stress chemistry. And stress promotes fat retention, especially around the middle. Oh no!

Oh yes.

Food deprivation increases appetite. Meal skipping increases appetite. Lack of pleasure increases appetite. Eventually all that unsatisfied appetite will lead to overeating and you're right back where you started. Sound familiar? Believe me, I know -- I've been there. That's one of the many reasons diets don't work.

For the next two weeks I'd like you to try NOT to jump into a new diet or extreme exercise plan. Here's what I'd like you to do instead:

Keep the Rhythm: Eat three healthy meals each day. By healthy I mean beautifully prepared, fresh, WHOLE foods. Processed foods do not serve you, particularly if they say "low fat," or "lean cuisine." And the kitchen is closed after 7 PM. You need at least three to four hours to fully digest your food before you go to sleep at night. You want to give your body the gift of restorative sleep. That won't happen if it is busy digesting your evening meal.

Banish the Offenders: Freeze the left over Christmas cookies. Lighten up or eliminate alcohol consumption for the next few weeks. Most of the pounds you gain around the holidays come from foods and beverages you don't normally consume on a daily basis. When you stop consuming empty calories, your body releases the excess weight it picked up with very little intervention. Seriously.

Eat Only What You Can Savor, Begin with a Conscious Plate: When we pay attention to the food we’re eating we increase our metabolic power. This is called the Cephalic Phase Digestive Response. Researchers have estimated that as much as 30 to 40 percent of the total digestive response to any meal is due to CPDR. Smelling, seeing, and tasting our food initiates a chain of reactions to prepare our body for incoming food so that we can metabolize it efficiently. It even affects our calorie-burning capacity.

Lean into a New Form of Exercise: To many people, exercise is a dirty word that conjures up images of sweating, huffing, puffing, and aching muscles. When you think of exercise as something that you are forcing yourself to do -- a necessary evil to achieve a result that you desire -- it's not something that you are likely to look forward to.

Reframe exercise as a gift that you give yourself. Exercise can be become as natural as brushing your teeth or washing your face -- an activity that you just wouldn't skip. Find something you truly enjoy doing and savor the experience.

Wishing you delicious meals, joyful movement and abundant thoughts in the New Year...
